The History of the castle

The castle was founded in 1280 at the mouth of the Aurajoki, but has been rebuilt more times since. After 1556 a new phase in the construction of the castle began, The castle Renaissance court construction, which  gave the starting signal for the whole of Finland renaissance period.

Governor-General Per Brahe spent holding court in Turku Castle in the 1600`th century, and for notice Sweden`s King Eric XIV, who was imprisoned in the castle`s round tower in the late 16th century declared insane.

After many phases of the castle was heavily damaged by bombing in 1941. After the war began the restoration, which was completed in 1961. Most of the castle rooms have been restored to its original state.

The castle has since 1881 been operating the city of Turku History Museum.
