Old Bergen Museum

Experience the atmosphere about how it was to live in the 1800s Bergen when you visit this beautiful natural place.

The Museum opened in 1946 and the Old Bergen Museum is an open-air museum with 55 wooden houses from 1945 to 1981. Many of them were moved when areas of the city were rebuilt and stood originally in the centre of Bergen.

Bergen was Europe`s biggest wooden city in the 1800s and this open-air museum, you can meet people from the past as masters and servants, and the role players help to bring the museum to life.

The Frydenlund manor house in old Bergen (Gamle Bergen). It was built in the 1790s for a merchant, as a summer residence in the Sandviken area.

The Museum opened in 1946, and Old Bergen Foundation succeeded in establishing the museum and saved Bergen's old buildings. 

In a few years, a new visitor centre will be opened in the Old Bergen Museum.
