Besseggen Ridge Hiking Trail

Visit one of Norway's most beautiful hiking route across Besseggen Ridge. Jotunheimen National Park is characterised by high mountains, glaciers and deep lakes.

The Besseggen hiking trail is one of Norway's most popular and iconic hiking routes. It is in Jotunheimen National Park, known for its stunning alpine landscapes and beautiful lakes. The trail is famous for offering breathtaking views of two glacial-fed lakes, Gjende and Bessvatnet, and the surrounding peaks and valleys.

The hike's highlight is the breathtaking view from the top of Besseggen, where you can see the contrasting colours of the deep blue Gjende Lake and the emerald green Bessvatnet Lake, separated by a narrow ridge.

 


Fresh air, amazing colours and views

Experience the unforgettable views of the high mountains Glittertind at 2,452m (8,043 ft.), And Galdhøpiggen at 2,469 (8,098 ft.), The highest mountain in Northern Europe. Feel the colours, the fresh air and the silence.

The Besseggen trail is considered challenging, and suitable for those with moderate to good physical fitness. It involves some steep ascents and descents, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

 

 

Distance

The main trail is approximately 14 kilometres long, starting at Gjendesheim and ending at Memurubu or Gjendebu. Most hikers choose to hike from Gjendesheim to Memurubu.

The hike's highlight is the breathtaking view from the top of Besseggen, where you can see the contrasting colours of the deep blue Gjende Lake and the emerald green Bessvatnet Lake, separated by a narrow ridge.

 

 

One-Way Hike

The trail is a one-way hike, meaning you must arrange transportation back to your starting point. Boats are available at Memurubu or Gjendebu to take hikers back to Gjendesheim.

 


Lake Gjende

The tour also leads to one of Norway's most beautiful lakes Gjende. Among other things, the famous Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen emphasised the lake and its beauty in one of his books.

The trail along the ridge links the remote mountain lodges of Memurubo and Gjendesheim.
